Dego Released!

The Tale of the Malice King
When all was dark, he came in the night
And with him came gloom and fright
Atop his throne he proclaimed himself King
"It's the end of our days!" the bards would sing
With cries of pain, the world fell in his hand
For he was the king, and all was his land
No hero dared come to the world's aid
For he was the King of Malice and Shade

-Full length game, 30-40 hours
-Play with 3 friends - difficulty and treasure chests scale with player count

-Face off against challenging bosses
-Customize controls using input from keyboard and up to 4 gamepads
-Strive to reach level 200

Default controls for player 1 are: arrow keys, z, x
Pressing "Escape" will forfeit the current dungeon

What is the most recent version?
The newest patch is 1.04. If the readme file included with the game doesn't say version 1.04 on the second line, you need to download the patch. Extract the patch into the Dego folder.
Download Patch 1.04

Can I use my old character?
Yes! In the old demo "Saves" folder you will find a file for each character and a save of your control config. Just copy and paste these files into the new Dego "Saves" folder. When you first load your character, the save file will be auto-updated to work with the new saved data.

How many items can I hold in my inventory?
You can hold 50 items.

Will you release an update or new content?
There was a lot planned for the game, but in order to make the release date, some things had to be cut out. That means there is extra content halfway made that is already in the game, just no way to access it. I would like to someday release this content, but there are currently no plans.

The game is too hard!
Try going back to previous dungeons. They are random and you never know what you may find. Quests and bosses are especially useful for gaining experience and gold.

How do I control the game?
If you're having trouble setting up multiplayer, you can use a program like GlovePIE, which lets you map wiimote buttons to keyboard keys. If you use the GlovePIE program, connect your wiimotes to your computer using bluetooth, load the controlscript.pie file included with the game, and hit run.

The game doesn't work!
The most common problem is missing or outdated DirectX 9 dlls. You can download the update from www.microsoft.com If it's a gameplay bug or another type of error, post it here, and I'll try to fix it.

THIS IS SO SWEET.
But there is a weird error that happens when I try to play on a non-administrative account ad change the controls.

Anonymous said...

I sometimes get an error saying "Runtime Error 105 - File does not exist at line 23595" when trying to select a character.

Characters seem to sometimes start inside walls in dungeon 9. The characters aren't visible, no movement can be done, and the screen is centered on a wall.

Additionally, it seems that many (all except 1?) dungeon 9 variants are not completable because some doors don't open (top left and top right rooms).

With P1, P3, and P4 trying to start dungeon 11, most attempts had P1 invisible. It seemed P1 could move up and down since the screen would move a bit, but progress couldn't be made because the screen wouldn't scroll to the right.

I've released a patch to fix the player spawn problems. Thanks for pointing them out. I'll take a look at the first problem later. As for your issues with dungeon 9, the goal is to light 3 candle sticks which are randomly placed. If a door wont open, there are none past that door.

I took a look at the runtime error and it turns out one of the item files was missing from the .exe, so there's another quick patch. You just need to download the latest patch to fully update, and the full download is always the latest patched version.

so are you gonna continue to expand it With new items and such?

at above

did you read the passage?

Anonymous said...

The game seems to crash when two players equip items at the same time.

Anonymous said...

The game also crashes when I try to switch equips with the Snowball I'm currently holding

Anonymous said...

Thank-you for very timely patches, as soon as I got the file not found I jumped on here and it was already patched :P

Anonymous said...

For one dungeon, my character would somehow turn into a giant opening treasure chest whenever it attacked. The actual chests were also getting messed up. After starting another dungeon after that, the game crashed when I tried to attack.

The game also crashed when I tried trading (windmill and gold for a pet?).

Moondoggie said...

this is very strange... we never encountered any of these before it was compressed.

anthony said...

i dont encounter any of them???? mine is 100 percent fine

Anonymous said...

I'm the August 14, 2010 5:18 PM anonymous.

If what the next poster said about snowballs is true, then two players equipping items at the same time might not have anything to do with the crash since both players' characters had snowballs equipped at that time. However, we eventually stopped trying equipping at the same time (to check what caused the crash) and changing the snowballs one at a time worked on the first tries.

Anonymous said...

It doesnt even start for me :P
It just crashes as soon as Im finished clicking on it, Ima go back to the demo for now XD

@ above anonymous... When you extracted dego from the zipped file, did you move the files to a different folder? If so, you are probably missing the media folder. It is an invisible folder, therefore if you moved the other files and not that folder, it would crash instantly. I had the same problem. If you were to just redownload it again and keep all the files there or just search for the invisible folder by changing your settings on your computer and then moving it next to dego, it should fix your problem.

For some reason, my demon's souls stopped working. I wasn't regaining HP and I actually had SP. They worked until I got defeated by the second opponent in the Hero's Championship, but I don't know if they're related. They now work again after I restarted Dego.

Another problem I had was the character's weapon turning into a girl when attacking during one dungeon. The game then crashed during the next dungeon when trying to attack.

Might it be possible to change how to input dashing (to something like a 3rd button + direction)? Dashing has been more often happening accidentally instead of voluntarily (something like trying to take small steps to position self -> dashing and getting killed instead).

Fire/spikes also seem to be capable of quickly repeatedly hitting a player if they either keep going in the direction of the fire/spikes for even a few moments or are stuck against a wall, killing them nearly instantly.

I found typos! The Badge of strength says it gives +5 range and The Badge of courage says it gives +5 Strength.

Mike said...

If the game crashes and gives a specific error, please post it here.

-Turns out the snowball was referencing an old, unused image file that I deleted right before the final version. Which explains why it worked during testing. It will be fixed in the next patch.

-Just a heads up, you can only hold 50 items in your inventory. This might cause some problems with missing items during trading.

-I have no idea why the regen seemed to stop working. I'll double check the code.

-There is a bizarre bug where the graphic of one objects becomes mixed with another, and the game crashes the next dungeon. I'll do my best to find a fix.

-Just do your best to avoid spikes and flames! I'll look at preventing them from repeatedly hitting you and adjusting the dash double tap sensitivity.

-Badge of Strength does in fact boost range. It's not a very intuitive naming convention, but it's too late to rename all of those types of items.

Also, I'm very surprised by how far some of you have gotten. Already at the Hero's Championship!

Anonymous said...

Unlike the "line 23595" errors, I've only been getting generic Windows 7 messages saying the program has to close for these more recent crashes.

As for trading, I didn't mention missing items but just it crashing. The crash did lead to missing items though. Character A gave Character B an item and then quit, which saved Character A's profile without the item. Character B and C then tried to trade, but it crashed, so the item A gave to B was lost since B's profile wasn't saved.

Other things:
It seems that whoever's player number is lower has priority over items on the ground. If P1 is at full HP and is standing over a healing item, then P2-4 can't pick it up. Of course, this is easily avoidable and even if it does happen, players are usually moving all the time so P1 wouldn't be staying on the item for long.

Items sometimes drop inside walls and become unobtainable.

Monsters sometimes end up in walls. I've noticed this happening a few times with dashing monsters, but there was once when monsters somehow teleported into walls (and they don't have a teleporting attack). It happened in dungeon 9. There were dolls and some two other bluish monsters (bears?). When the purple ball was destroyed, the bluish monsters somehow ended up in the wall. Luckily, the mage's level 1 skill was able to kill them. I don't remember if the doors opened after that or not. This might've happened in the lower right room.

After teleporting, if there are NPCs that are "behind" pillars (or anything that should be covering them), they are shown on top of the pillars.

Other rooms in the battle arena are visible from the corners.

Anonymous said...

I like the idea of the other rooms being visible in the battle arena

anthony said...

ya on dungeon 9 did the same thing to me lol

Anonymous said...

The crash-when-two-players-change-equipment-at-the-same-time problem occurred again but snowballs weren't involved this time.

The Unlock Shop sometimes displays items twice. This results in other items not showing up. This time, the first 4 or 5 items were showing up twice until I switched player number (they kept showing up twice even after I tried quitting a few times). It might be happening after a new item gets unlocked, but I usually only check the shop to look at the newly unlocked items' stats, so I don't know if it can happen at other times too.

The new patch is out. As usual, the full download is always the latest patched version. People who downloaded previously should get the patch and extract it into the Dego folder.

Changes:
-fixed several crash issues
-fixed several broken items
-improved weaker items
-improved appearance rate of Crypt Keeper in Catacombs 2

At the start of dungeon 11 (Catacombs 2), while playing 2-player, the first player was not visible. If the first player pressed the keys to go up or down, the camera would move accordingly, but left and right did not have this effect.

That bug was fixed in a previous patch along with a similar bug for dungeon 9.

I'm using Box.net for my site, and I'm currently having my saves and others saves too on my site, I wanted to set up multiple Boxes, yet I haven't been able to do so. I have tried to set up multiple be using HTML, but I'm having problems with that, although there is one way of going around that problem. In Box you are able to have folders of download able content, and set the folders on Public mode so that everyone can few it. So you could be able to upload what you need into folders, set them as Public and set links on your site to the folders.

I don't really know how Drop Box works, but I shall be looking into it.

I want to try the game... but it's completely broken.

I don't own any Wiimotes, and I have no idea if that's relevant. But at the main menu, the only buttons that work are escape and enter. At the character select screen, space seems to be a player 1 button and shift a player 2 button, as they let those players start customizing... but no key anywhere on my keyboard works as an arrow or directional key, even the ones in controlscript.PIE (seriously? QWER as the four directions? Is this made for a DVORAK keyboard?)

I've tried changing the mappings. Nothing helps. I cannot move the selection on the main menu, and I cannot do anything else because I can't set up the key bindings. Manually editing controlscript.PIE is of no use, because the bindings in there are ignored anyways.

Windows 7, fully up-to-date DirectX 11.

Mike said...

You can navigate the main menu using the arrow keys + space/enter, or by using player 1's controls. Just completely ignore that .pie file, it has nothing to do with the game's controls. It's for people who already use GlovePIE.

The default controls for player 1 are arrow keys, Z, and X. You can change them to whatever you want from inside the game.

Anonymous said...

I'm no idiot, mate. I tried every key on my keyboard; arrow keys did nothing, either at the menu or at the character select screen.

Mike said...

It's weird that the arrow keys aren't doing anything, but the other buttons work. What type of keyboard do you have?

Try using wasd, shift, and control to play and see if that works (outside of the title screen).

Hi Mike,

I'm having the same exact problem as the person who commented on Sept 14, 2010. The arrow keys do not work for me. Nor do the WASD keys. I can press Z/X to accept/cancel for player 1, LCtrl/LShift for player 2, [/] for player 3, numpad +/enter for player 4. Enter, Space, and Esc work on the title screen. But I've pressed every other key on my keyboard and nothing else works. I have no way to move the selected item (orange text) up or down for any of the four players. I can't get past the player join screen because I can't "Accept" the player's appearance. Also, I can't customize controls because I can't move down on the title screen.

I made sure to update to the latest June 2010 DirectX 9 DLLs. I'm using Windows XP SP3 and an old IBM PS/2 keyboard (Model# KB-3923). I hope this helps somehow. The screenshots for Dego look really cool :/

Thanks!

Steve

Mike said...

That is so bizarre. I downloaded the latest version from the web to double check and everything works fine here.

Thanks for giving me info on your system setup. I'll look into it and try and see what's up.

Mike said...

Okay, for anyone having the keyboard error, please download this small test app. http://www.mediafire.com/?3aaib1osoljeboa

Run it and answer these five questions:
Can you move the cube with the arrow keys?
Can you move the cube with wasd keys?
There are three numbers on the screen.
What are they when you press up?
What are they when you press down?
What are they when you press up and down at the same time?

Hopefully this will give me a better idea of the problem.

Steve said...

I ran the KeyTest program with the following results:

Can you move the cube with the arrow keys? Yes
Can you move the cube with wasd keys? Yes
There are three numbers on the screen.
What are they when you press up? 1,0,1
What are they when you press down? 0,1,-1
What are they when you press up and down at the same time? 1,1,0

However, after the KeyTest was successful, I decided to give Dego another try, and now the arrow keys work for me! I wish I could tell you exactly what has changed to make the arrow keys start working, but I'm not sure.

When I tried Dego previously, my PC had been running for about a month without reboot. I rebooted just prior to the successful KeyTest. Previously, I did not reboot after installing the latest DirectX drivers because it didn't tell me that I needed to reboot, but maybe I needed to? I also changed my desktop colors from 32-bit to 16-bit in order to make a different game work better. I can't think of any other changes...

If I can figure out exactly what made the arrow keys start working for me, I'll let you know. But in the meantime, I'll enjoy some Dego :)

Thanks Mike!

Mike said...

Yeah, everything should be normal based on the KeyTest. What a weird problem. I rarely restart my computer myself, and sometimes when a weird, confusing problem comes up, I forget that just restarting is often the fix.

Glad you were able to get the game working.

I just downloaded this game, Michael Pierce told me about it, and it doesn't work. "run time error 3002-could not load sound at line 22352" Michael still has a copy of patch 1.03 and that works just fine for me using windows XP, but am I missing out on anything from 1.04?

Mike said...

I won't be able to make the game Mac compatible, since it uses DirectX, which Microsoft keeps as a windows exclusive.

That sound error is weird. When did it happen? Right at startup? I'll try the game on my old XP computer later and see what happens.

And you aren't missing out on anything in 1.03. 1.04 just fixed two minor bugs with dieing in multiplayer.

Megan said...

Yep, right at launch, doesn't even get to the main window where you can click play.

sunarst4r said...

Picked the game back up and I have found 2 problems.
One is a spelling error, the other is a bug.

The "Badge of Strength" gives +5 Range, while The "Badge of Courage" gives +5 Strength.

The Bug is in the arena Slimes (or Bees?) Deal instant kills. In result the HP bar gets completely filled, and it takes a few seconds to empty out. So they are doing a crap load of damage.

Great game though! Loving it!

Mike said...

The "of Strength" and "of Courage" series of items were poorly named, and it unfortunately carries through the entire game.

One of the arena challenges require you fight without getting hit once, and you fight a group of slimes and bees. These are supposed to kill you in one hit to match the challenge. There are four different challenges in total, and which one you get is random, but the NPC explains it before hand.

I'm glad people are still playing!

Have you considered a PSN/XBLA/iOS port? I'm not saying I want to pay for something I already have and love, but I would, and I'm sure it would take off! I think for iOS you pay $100 and get a license for your game or something similar...sell it at $1.99 and make your money back and profits back in no time!

I'm not sure of all of the legalities, but I'd love to see this game make it else where! This game has what a lot of newer games are missing, basics! Unlockables, customization, progression/character improvement(level ups), character upgrades(gear), a vast world full of various dungeons, the ability to be somewhat random...You've got a good game, and the fact that even 4-5 years after it's initial release you still stay active on the blog and if someone finds a problem, 9/10 you hurry up and fix it!

Way to go on being the best you can be and providing the best you can! Keep it up!

I have a deg full versions and looking for help I am 30 level and I can not defeat the boss dragon in the desert and played with his friends and also do not give advice or a mistake or something

Moondoggie said...

The boss dragon in the desert is definitely one of the harder bosses in this game. Like any other boss, they all have their patterns. Depending on his health his attacks change, but he still cycles through similar attacks. If playing a ranged character, it is a bit easier to dodge the spiral electricity attacks by moving near a tree and having that block the attack. If you are a melee character, I believe you will have a bit more trouble with this boss. You will end up getting hurt by the spiral attacks so try to learn when he is going to attack and step back. There is one advantage to being a melee character, I believe the dragon will do his close range attacks more frequently since he is right next to you.

I don't have any melee characters below level 30, but I know it can definitely be done. I just successful defeated the boss using a level 30 priest. I just want to let you know that it is possible, but it takes some time to learn his patterns. I know that running through the game straight can be done, but it is always good to go back to previous levels to get more experience and better equipment to make the later stages of the game easier. One last note, this dragon may be hard, but some of the next bosses get even harder.
